How bleaching improves edible oil quality

Bleaching is a critical refining step that removes pigments and impurities affecting oil safety, product stability and downstream equipment performance. During the process, tailored bleaching agents bind to contaminants, which are then removed through filtration. Efficient bleaching eliminates:

  • carotenoids and chlorophyll
  • oxidation products through decomposition and partial removal
  • contaminants such as soaps and trace metals
  • traces of phosphatides
  • polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons
  • other pollutants

The result: a commercially viable product with superior clarity, longer shelf life, more consistent refining performance. Proper bleaching also prevents negative effects on subsequent processes, such as fouling in downstream equipment.

Understanding the bleaching process in edible oil refining

The process begins by mixing oil with a bleaching agent, such as clay, and then filtering out the impurities. Once saturated, filters containing spent clay or other bleaching agents are periodically regenerated, while fresh filters replace them. In some cases, spent clay can be reused for prefiltration to reduce material costs, although this is only feasible when bleaching dry oils.

Advantages of two-stage bleaching in edible oil processing

Two-stage bleaching removes impurities more thoroughly than single-stage bleaching. By applying different agents under controlled temperature and moisture conditions, this method optimizes the bleaching process, enabling the deepest extraction of components such as chlorophyll.

For larger-scale operations, such as palm or rapeseed, hybrid two-stage systems combined with single-step filtration balance high quality with cost-efficiency, delivering significant clay savings. Common agents include:

  • Natural bleaching earths: Suitable for animal fats, though with limited colour-reduction capability
  • Acid-activated bleaching earths: Versatile and widely used to remove most impurities
  • Activated carbon: Effective in removing polyaromatic hydrocarbons and specific pollutants
  • Synthetic amorphous silica: Used mainly in wet bleaching to selectively remove phosphatides, trace metals and soaps
